Does correcting mistakes immediately help?

A wrong answer has to be corrected on the spot — not at the end of the session, and not on the next attempt — because the brain is most open to correction in the seconds right after a mistake.

What the research says

A study published in The Psychological Record compared three conditions head-to-head — immediate feedback, delayed feedback, and no feedback at all — on children practicing times tables. Only one condition made a lasting difference: immediate correction was the sole approach that meaningfully cut down on persistent errors. Waiting to give feedback turned out to be no better than not giving it at all when it came to answers that kept coming back wrong session after session.

What this means in practice

A mistake needs correcting right then — not saved for the end of the session, not left for the next attempt. The window when a child’s brain is most open to correction is immediately after the error, while the question is still sitting in working memory. Wait too long and that window closes.

Try this

  • The moment a wrong answer comes in, supply the right one and keep moving — skip the lengthy re-explanation.
  • Bring that same fact back later in the same session, after a few other questions. Getting it right again soon after the correction is what locks it in.
  • Don’t let a child “self-check” at the end of a session — the longer the gap between the mistake and the fix, the less it helps.
