Do flashcards work for times tables?
Flashcards feel old-fashioned — but the research on them is surprisingly strong. The mechanism that makes them work is not the card format itself, but what the card format forces the learner to do.
What the research says
Ophuis-Cox, Catrysse and Camp (2023) conducted what is arguably the most directly relevant study: a real classroom comparison of flashcard-based retrieval practice against chanting, with 48 second-grade pupils and teachers following the protocol. The flashcard group outperformed the chanting group both immediately after practice and at a delayed retention test. Effect sizes (η²=0.29–0.34) were large for educational research.
A broader meta-analysis of practice testing confirms the pattern: active retrieval consistently outperforms restudying and passive repetition across a wide range of conditions and age groups.
What this means in practice
Flashcards work because they force retrieval — the act of trying to remember, rather than being shown the answer. Every retrieval attempt, including failed ones, strengthens the memory trace more than passive exposure.
Try this
- Show the question; let your child answer before revealing the answer. The attempt matters even when it’s wrong.
- Separate the cards into “fast” and “slow” piles. Return to slow cards more frequently.
- Don’t shuffle out cards your child gets right every time — include some easy wins to maintain confidence and fluency.
