Does correcting mistakes immediately help?
When a child answers incorrectly, the correction needs to happen in the same moment — not at the end of the session, and not on the next attempt. The brain is most receptive to correction immediately after the error.
What the research says
A direct comparison of immediate feedback, delayed feedback, and no feedback on times tables with children — published in The Psychological Record — found that immediate correction was the only condition that meaningfully reduced persistent errors. Delayed feedback was no better than no feedback for reducing wrong answers that reoccurred across sessions.
What this means in practice
When a child answers incorrectly, the correction needs to happen in the same moment — not at the end of the session, and not on the next attempt. The brain is most receptive to correction immediately after the error, when the question is still active in working memory.
Try this
- When a wrong answer comes, give the correct one immediately and move on — don’t dwell or re-explain.
- Return to that same fact within the same session, a few questions later. The repeated correct retrieval after recent correction is particularly effective.
- Avoid letting a child “self-check” at the end — the gap between error and correction reduces the benefit.
