How long does it take to learn times tables?

The honest answer depends less on how much your child practises than on how that practice is distributed across time. The research is unusually clear on this — and the conclusion is more encouraging than most parents expect.

What the research says

The timeline depends less on total practice time than on how that time is distributed. A landmark study by Rea and Modigliani found that children using spaced practice remembered roughly twice as much as those who practised in concentrated sessions — even when total time was equal.

A 2025 meta-analysis of spacing and retrieval practice across over 3,000 students found an average effect size of d=0.54 — a meaningful and consistent advantage for distributed practice in real classroom settings, not just laboratory conditions.

What “weeks” means in practice: children who practise 3–5 minutes daily typically show measurable improvements within the first week, with solid, reliable recall forming over 4–8 weeks depending on starting point and consistency.

There’s no universal timeline, but the pattern is consistent: children who practise a little every day learn faster than those who do longer sessions less frequently — even if the second group logs more total minutes. Consistency matters more than intensity.

  • Set a fixed time each day — after school, before dinner — rather than fitting it in when convenient.
  • Track which facts are still shaky after two weeks. Those need more retrieval attempts, not more exposure.
