My child gets 6×7 right at home but wrong in the test. Why?
This is one of the most frustrating experiences in preparing for the MTC: a child who answers confidently at home and then freezes under test conditions. It's not vague performance anxiety — it has a specific neurological explanation.
What the research says
Maths anxiety has a specific and well-documented mechanism: it occupies working memory resources that would otherwise be used for retrieval. Ashcraft and Krause’s foundational research demonstrated that this effect is real, measurable, and disproportionately affects children with the most potential — those who care about getting it right.
A study of middle-school children found that those with high maths anxiety were specifically disadvantaged on time-constrained tasks compared to untimed ones. The time pressure itself — not the maths — was the trigger. A separate study confirmed that maths anxiety interferes specifically with retrieval, not with other cognitive processes.
What this means in practice
The gap between home performance and test performance is not a sign that a child doesn’t know the tables. It’s a sign that their retrieval is not yet automatic enough to withstand stress. The solution is more retrieval practice in low-pressure conditions until recall becomes reflexive.
Try this
- Avoid recreating test pressure at home if your child already shows anxiety. Build recall first, then introduce mild time awareness gradually.
- Celebrate fast answers rather than focusing on wrong ones. Speed under calm conditions is the goal before introducing stakes.
- If anxiety is significant, speak to the class teacher — the MTC has accommodations available for some children.
