How do I prepare my child for the MTC?
The Multiplication Tables Check isn't a maths test in the traditional sense — it's a recall test under mild time pressure. Preparing for it means building the right kind of memory, not just knowing the answers.
What the research says
The MTC gives children 6 seconds per question — enough time to recall and input an answer, but not enough to calculate one. This is by design: the government’s assessment framework states that 6 seconds was chosen specifically to allow recall and keyboard input while preventing calculation strategies. The test measures automaticity: the ability to retrieve a fact without conscious effort.
Research on how times tables are stored in the brain shows they function as verbal memories, processed in the language regions rather than the mathematical ones (Dehaene & Cohen, 1997; Dehaene et al., 1999). This is why retrieval — saying or recalling the answer — is more effective practice than calculation or passive exposure.
For mixed-question practice, a study comparing interleaved and blocked practice found students who practised across all tables in random order scored significantly higher one month later than those who drilled one table at a time. The MTC format itself — 25 questions, all tables, no predictable order — makes interleaved practice the natural preparation method.
What this means in practice
Preparing for the MTC is less about “knowing” times tables and more about making them instant. A child who can work out 7×8 in three seconds will struggle with the 6-second window once you account for reading time and keyboard input. The target is recall under a second — which only comes from regular retrieval practice, not calculation practice.

- Use voice answers rather than keyboard — it removes input speed as a variable and isolates recall speed.
- Focus extra attention on the facts your child hesitates on, not the ones they already know.
