At what age should children start learning times tables?
Children are typically expected to have multiplication facts memorized by the end of 3rd grade, but the question of when to start — and what 'ready' looks like — is worth understanding before you invest significant practice time.
What the research says
Soltanlou and colleagues’ longitudinal study followed children across roughly ages 7–8, tracking the transition from calculation-based strategies to memory-based retrieval for times tables. Their findings showed that this transition typically accelerates around age 8–9 — which is close to when many curricula, including Common Core, expect children to have multiplication facts within 100 memorized (by the end of 3rd grade).
Younger children can also form times table memories, as the Ophuis-Cox classroom study demonstrated with second-grade pupils. But the consolidation of automatic, fast recall typically requires consistent practice across roughly ages 7 to 9.
What this means in practice
Starting early is useful, but the most critical window is around 2nd to early 3rd grade. Children who begin regular retrieval practice early typically have sufficient time to build reliable recall by the time fluency is formally expected. Children who start later can still prepare effectively, but the timeline is tighter.
Try this
- If your child is in 2nd grade, start regular retrieval practice now — even informally. The early months are the most valuable.
- If your child is in 3rd or 4th grade and behind, prioritize the facts most likely to appear on timed fact checks: the 6, 7, 8, and 9 tables tend to be the ones children find hardest.
