My child can recite the 7 times table but can't answer 7×8 quickly. Why?
There's a difference between being able to recite the seven times table and being able to answer 7×8 instantly when asked out of context. Many children can do the first but not the second — and that difference is exactly what most fact-fluency tests measure.
What the research says
Reciting tables in sequence — 7×1=7, 7×2=14, 7×3=21 — and answering random facts are two distinct cognitive tasks. Soltanlou and colleagues’ longitudinal study of third-grade children found that as children develop times table competency, they transition from counting and calculation strategies to verbal memory retrieval. Recitation keeps children in the sequential pattern; random retrieval forces the verbal memory system.
What this means in practice
A child who can recite a table perfectly may still be at an early stage of memorization. The transition from “I can work it out” to “I just know it” requires practice in the format that tests retrieval — random questions, not sequential recitation.
Try this
- Always test in random order, not sequence. If a child hesitates on a random question they can recite easily, that’s the exact gap to work on.
- Time the answers informally — if it takes more than 2 seconds, it’s being calculated, not recalled.
- Ask a table fact mid-conversation, without setting up a practice session. That informal test is the most honest measure of real recall.
