Why does my child freeze when asked times tables on the spot?
When a child who knows their multiplication facts goes blank in the moment, it can look like nerves or carelessness. It's neither. There is a precise neurological reason why anxiety specifically prevents retrieval — even when the knowledge is there.
What the research says
Ashcraft and Krause’s research documented a specific mechanism: math anxiety occupies working memory — the mental workspace used for retrieval — leaving less capacity available for the actual task. Crucially, their research found this effect was strongest in children with high mathematical ability who also experienced high anxiety. The more a child cares about performing correctly, the more working memory anxiety consumes.
A 2020 Frontiers in Psychology study confirmed that anxiety interferes specifically with retrieval, not with mathematical reasoning more broadly. A child who can reason through a problem can still fail to retrieve a memorized fact if anxiety is high enough.
What this means in practice
Freezing is not a sign of not knowing. It’s a sign that retrieval is not yet automatic enough to be anxiety-proof. The goal is to practice until recall is reflexive — below the threshold where anxiety can interfere.
